Sleep clinic is by far the most effective, and sounds like it might be the only option you have left…. :/

I am normally a calm and relaxed person who doesn’t get angry or annoyed easily, everyone I know says I’m down-to-earth, easy-going and not a nervous or anxious person.

But if I have to share a room when visiting other people’s houses etc. and there is someone who snores, it is like a switch has just been turned on inside me, my whole state of mind changes immediately and suddenly. I turn into this horrible, really angry person, I want to hit things and shout and do anything, no matter how selfish or illegal, to stop the other person from snoring or stop the music. I get so angry I can’t even describe it or simulate it when not in that situation. The exact same thing happens when I can’t sleep due to other people’s loud/bassy music e.g. neighbours having a rave in the summer.

I don’t think it’s a matter of noise stopping the sleep – I can sleep on planes, trains, in cities on busy roads, I even go to sleep myself with the radio (Radio 4, talk) – so it seems it’s not a sleep problem but an anger problem. Obviously earplugs do nothing for this, it’s too loud.

Any tips on how to get over this? I really feel like killing someone when this happens and it’s so out of character it’s unbelievable, no-one I have told about has believed me until they’ve seen it happen as I am really calm most of the time. Should I speak to a doctor or can I resolve it myself?

Doubt if you can resolve it..I’ve spent my whole adult life exactly as you describe this problem.. I recently spent 4 days in a hospital and was in a semi private room and the 1st night the old guy in the other bed snored louder than a steam engine and when not snoring he was screaming his head off because of dementia..You bet i felt like jumping out of bed and bashing his head in.. So there you go,,You’re not alone

hello,
i live in a small city in Miri, Malaysia. I’ll be grateful if there is anyone can help or giving some good advices regarding my girl’s problem. My daughter will be 4 years old next month (march). Active, talkative, and sweet. But one thing that worried me all this time is her snore. I think she started to snore when she is a few months old. But I thought it was normal and funny because the snores kinda sound like her grandpa. then recently i read about the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and it kinda freak me out. i do study for the symptom though.Yes, she has a poor weight gain..quite a tiny girl for her age. i watched her during her sleep, but i didn’t notice any sign of her stop breathing. It was just a loud snores that sometime i have to wake her up asking whether she is okay. she is not hyperactive..for her age she is just playful and obedient. she never having sleeping problems in fact she sleep soundly till morning. after reading a few articles about sleeping behaviour, i did change her sleeping pattern by lying down to her side not her back. It does reduces the snores but the snores is still there. I did brought her to the paediatrics to check up whether she is suffering from asthma but the result is negative. she always sneezing and have stuffy nose especially when it is cold (I stopped using AC then) or been in a dusty place. i cleaned our bed, blankets and pillows regularly to get rid of dust mite. in this small city i don’t think we have specialist on OSAS or sleep study. Even if we do, the cost will be very high. so here i am asking your opinion or suggestion or any tips that will help me to get through this problem. all feedbacks are mostly appreciated. thank you.

Snoring in children is quite normal. You should not be afraid of sleep apnea as well. Sleep apnea is very rare in children. Besides, if you have not noticed your child stop breathing while sleeping for 5-10 seconds period this means that she does not have sleep apnea.

Snoring in children is often caused by tonsils and adenoids. Doctors love to suggest in this case yo make tonsils and adenoids surgery, which is quite an easy to perform surgery, but I personally hate all kinds of surgeries and think that surgery should be chosen only after all the other options have been tried out.

I could have suggested visiting http://snoringremediescenter.com/ – which is a fine resource for those who have snoring problem, however this web-site is not specialized on dealing with snoring in children so some of the snoring remedies which are reviewed there may just not be for children. However you may still try anti snoring pillow and aromatherapy aromas..

I think there is no need of performing a sleep study. I also think that your child’s health is not in danger. She can well start dealing with snoring after she has grown up. So do not worry. You can consult again your pediatrician about tonsils and adenoids.

And again don’t worry and do not read much about sleep apnea. It is well known that people who study at medical universities often think that they may be under the risk of all the diseases they read about, just because they read much about different kinds of diseases and the more they read about diseases and there symptoms the more parallels they make between their health condition and the diseases.

i’m almost 21 and have always snored, and it’s really embarrassing. i’ve had my tonsils and adenoids out a few years ago. i have no idea what to do, i’m moving in with 3 of my friends in a few months and i’m so anxious about sleeping! if anyone has any tips to help me stop snoring, it would be helpful.

i plan on losing 30 pounds this summer, do you think that would help?
—to the second answer…i wake up feeling refreshed and normal, no gasping. if no one told me, i wouldn’t know i snore.

Do you wake up gagging or gasping for air? You could have sleep apnea and it is extremely dangerous. The only symptom is snoring. My brother died of sleep apnea. When you are sleeping your throat closes down, at first it is only evident in the air trying to pass through and your dropped throat muscle vibrates and causes a snore. Eventually it becomes bad enough that the air doesn’t pass, you quit breathing for a period of time, and sometimes you wake up fully, and other times you just come out of sleep enough to start breathing again. Go to a doctor and ask for a sleep test. That’s the only way to find out if you have it. If you are overweight it is a good chance that you have it and losing weight will help. I have sleep apnea and cannot even take a nap in a chair without my mask on and my C PAP blowing air in my throat to keep my throat muscle open. C PAP stands for Continuous Positve Air Pressure. Go to a doctor – you will sleep so much better and awake rested and ready to meet the day.

My husband has been snoring so badly lately in the past couple months that I can no longer sleep in the same bed as him. We take turns sleeping on the couch. I can’t sleep at ALL at night with him in the same room (and especially now, I’m about to have a baby, I NEED what little sleep I’m going to get!) I’ve been trying to find something to stop his snoring, that might actually work, does anyone know any tips? Also, when the baby’s born, I can’t be the only one waking up with the baby bc my husband is in the other room sleeping. And it’s putting a huge damper on our relationship, I don’t feel as close to him lately, sleeping separately! Please, any good advice is so appreciated!

Send him to the doctor. The "old knowledge" about snoring is that regular snorers are at higher risk for sleep apnea, and so they should at least have a sleep study done. However, newer studies have shown that people who snore are at greater risk for all sorts of things, including heart problems and other scary health glitches. Get hubby to doc quick not only for the health of your relationship but also for his own health.

Does anyone have any tips to stop snoring?

Snoring is very common amongst the over weight, a disorder usually left unattended.
Breathing strip is a temporary measure not a long term solution
Exercise and diet control to lose weight is the right direction.
Elevate your head position with pillow or bed will also help.
If there isn’t any improvement in a month or 2 , see a ENT specialist, you may need a minor surgery.

Hepo, the thumbs down wasn’t from me lol!

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is very common in a lot of people (particularly the obese and fat-necked) in the US.

I advise that he has a pulmonologist/sleep specialist have a look at him; a sleep study may be warranted. If he has been having unrefreshing sleep, as well as daytime sleepiness and headaches, then he most likely has OSA.
