Hi, so ive always had issues sleeping and im so frustrated at this point. Im 15 and have had problems sleeping for 15 years. Ive done everything (lavender, music, meditation, reading, stories on tape, no tv, no computer, quiet, loud, dark, night lights, yoga, exercise, routine) and nothing helps. Ive tried like every over the counter sleeping pill (including melatonin recently) they always work for like a month or something then stop. Ive gone to the doctor but they dont know why I dont sleep and dont want to prescribe me anything stronger because of my age.I just got a sinus surgery (for other reasons) and now i can breath WAYYYYYY better but it hasnt helped. Ive been told i snore and i know i toss and turn. I get tired and everything and fall asleep in the middle of the day and when I get the chance i sleep till like 2 in the afternoon. Just nighttime is when im active and even if im exausted as soon as i turn off the light its like im wide awake again and dont fall asleep for hours (some nights i dont even fall asleep and just lay there until its time to get up and go to school). Im in high school and cant run on 4 hour of sleep a night. So do you have any ideas ill do pretty much anything at this point all i want is to sleep.

Sorry for the legnth but THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH

There is a special medicine with a bee on the front. I’ll find the label

for a while now iv not been feeling well but have not got a gp as iv just registered and it takes from 7-10 days to fully register….any ways getting to the point.

i have rapidly put on weight this year even though i dont eat large portions or snack inbetween and i also get regular exercise.

i will highlight some facts about what i do have and if anyone can just give me more info i would greatly appreciate it….

i have heavy sleap apnea and stop breathing for 10-15 seconds whilst sleeping and this happens on a time lapse of every 5-10 mins of sleeping …i am always tired no matter how long i sleep i feel its not enough but then i have to get up or else my body and my head give me severe pain as well as migraine.

When i wake up i feel breathless as if i have i have a ton of bricks on my chest and my breathing is so loud people comment on it (also i dont know if this matters but i have a large chest area and i feel its so heavy and wondered if this could be making me feel like this) ………..any ways the other day i hard sharp pains along my left ribcage and tightening along under my bust wear my heart is …i thought its os i had been rushing around getting on the bus from the tube and the sudden temperature change may have caused it but when i got home i felt so weak and kept feeling anxiety like symptoms and burst in to tears and for some reason got very emotional but over what i dont know …the next day i hhad this pain again but it was so unbearable that i called the ambulance and they took me to hospital .

arriving at the hospital blood tests showed that my oxygen level to the heart was low and that i may have a suspected blood clot which they then ruled out . they also said my heart doesnt beat normal and beats fast …after checking for blood clots and not finding any they sent me home as its new years and no doctors available …..im very confused as im still short of breath i feel so weak and i can feel my heart at times running so fast !!! the doctor was rubbish who could hardly speak english …..i dont know what to do i am feeling so depressed and anxious all the time i feel as if i just want to be alone and just cry but i dont want to cry in front of friends and family ….please somebody help me i am going to the gp after the bank holiday weekend as theres no point going hospital as they dont care and had me hanging around for ages and i cant sleep in a hospital ward amongst others cos of my sleep apnea and my snoring is enough for the third floor to hear loool .

any comments are much appreciated

Your sleep apnea sounds rather severe. It will cause weight gain, fatigue, chest pain, low oxygen & other symptoms, all bad. Do you have a bipap or Cpap machine to help you breath at night? It will make a world of difference for you, but will take some time & determination to get used to. Is there another hospital you can go to? Or maybe a different Dr. will be on duty at the one you went to before. You really need to get some help as soon as possible. Are there urgent care clinics that are open at night in your area? That might be a good choice. But, the bottom line is, you need to get help soon. If you choose not to go to the ER or a clinic tonight, please call your GP right away tomorrow AM & explain what’s going on & that you don’t feel you should wait for several days for an appointment. Be polite, but firm, even asking to speak to an RN if needed.

My partner of 5 years snores. Initially we slept in the same bed, that changed after a while because of the noise. Now I am sleeping in the loungeroom down the hall, even with all the closed doors I can still hear him. I’ve asked him to see a Dr but he won’t.
He starts out with a ‘normal’ snore, then it works up in volume to a throaty crecendo and then he stops, for up to half a minute. Then he’ll splutter, cough and gasp, roll over, cough again and clear his throat. Then he will be quiet for a moment before he starts again. He usually settles down at about 4am which is when I get a couple of hours sleep.
He knows his snoring is related to his weight and diet, I’ve talked to my Doctor and passed on his recommendations that my Partner gets checked out because Dr thinks it shows he has sleep apnoea and that it is probably affecting his heart and oxygen intake but he won’t. – I’m his partner, but he would rather me sleep in the loungeroom with ear plugs than go see a doctor about his own health?. ‘Next week I’m gonna start exercising.’ Next week, Next week, Next week.
Sometimes while I am cooking he is so hungry he has to have some chips or some bread or something now. 5 minutes later when I serve dinner he isn’t hungry.
What the hell do I do?
He is a proud, fashion minded man who doesn’t fit into his ideals any more, he always says he’s gunna do this and he’ll do that, he’ll loose a few and all will be good. But he never starts. Why not? If he is so concerned for himself why doesn’t he change? Does he care about me – the energy and time that I put in to him? and my health? Is he too sleep deprived to think straight?

Snoring can cause a lot of things… daytime drowsiness, lack of concentration, learning difficulties, irritability, mood swings, lack of focus, etc. I believe his eating habits are unrelated, though. It’s possible he has some digestive issues that make him feel uncomfortable when his stomach is empty.

Saying he will exercise and not following through is just a personality flaw and not related to snoring. Have you offered to exercise with him? Perhaps having someone to go with will give him the extra push he needs to leave the house.

From what you describe, it really does sound like sleep apnea. If he refuses to see a doctor and undergo a sleep study, he should at the very least change his diet and start exercising. There are a couple of programs worth checking out at this link as well (two banners located under "Possible Solutions"): http://www.whypeoplesnore.com/sleep-apnea/

For general SNORING treatments/solutions, try these:
http://www.whypeoplesnore.com/snoring-treatments/
(There are some tips/tricks/products that may help.)

I’m sure he cares about you but is simply stubborn. Keep communicating and try some of the methods in the links above.

Good luck.

My brother has gained a lot of weight in the past 7 years or so. He is about 180cm tall and weighs 160kg. He’s 28 years old and has a 5 year old daughter from a previous relationship who I absolutely adore, and I’m so worried he is not going to be around to watch her grow up and be a father. He has sleep apnea, which is when he stops breathing in his sleep, and his snoring is unbearable. He falls asleep whilst driving because of this. He also is out of puff even from walking. The sad thing is, he doesn’t stop eating. I think it is emotional eating after our parents break-up. He acts like he does not care but this is really affecting his life, and when I try to tell him he needs to lose weight, especially for his daughter, he just brushes it off and continues eating and not exercising. What more can I do? The mother of his child left him, by the way..

He needs to see a "sleep specialist". A sleep specialist will conduct an overnight sleep study which will provide a wealth of information about your condition and appropriate treatment.

Sleep apnea when untreated, really strains the heart and causes a number of other health problems. Treat the apnea first, then he’ll need to see another doctor for his eating problem, also potentially needs to see a psychologist.

Hope this helps.

i really want to stop snoring, so i can go on a Germany trip. but i cant because im too embarrassed. Ive been researching but nothing helped. i want some good answers, not answers , that basically explain why i snore. i know all that stuff. i want some real ways of stopping snoring, like some exercises. and im only 13 so i don’t, drink or smoke. and please tell me some different ways, because i have researched and it didn’t work, such as sleeping on the side and breathing through nose, but i already do all those things. how can i stop it? if there is an exercise tell me please?

1 Use a single low pillow. Sleeping on too many pillows can stretch and narrow the nasal passage.
2 Try to sleep on your stomach, since snoring is less likely to occur in this position. 4
3 Adopt a healthy lifestyle. Extra weight, smoking, alcohol and drugs all exacerbate snoring.
4 Review your meds. Sleeping pills, antihistamines and other medications increase snoring.
5 Allergies and nasal congestion may be causing the problem.
6 Try an over-the-counter nasal strip. These strips may widen the nasal passages and decrease congestion to reduce snoring.

I love my dad and I’m the daddy’s little girl out of the three girls in my family and I’m not even the oldest. But he has been getting on my nerves a lot lately. I’m at the end of my rope with him. There’s this poetry slam called LTAB, Louder Than A Bomb poetry slam. It’s the biggest in the world and I was in it and my poem was about my dad. http://www.poetry.com/poems/stressed%2c-… that’s the link to the poem. I have been writing so many more poems and songs about how mad I am at him. Some better than others but that’s not the point. Anyway, I had rehearsed the poem so many times before and I never cried, but getting on the stage, something snapped and I cried through my whole poem. The reason I’m so mad at my dad is so many reasons. He thinks he’s king of the world or something. He’s got a hard head. He blames everyone for everything but never himself. "It’s never his fault, he’s never wrong, the whole dang world is according to him." but a lot of the time he is wrong! He is the one to blame and it makes me so mad. One time I yelled at him that he never admits he’s wrong and he said that I was wrong about that and said that it was my mother who never admits she’s wrong! She does admit when she’s wrong and she’s the only one in my house that can and will stand up to him. He puts so much pressure on me and there is so much turmoil in my life that I’m surprised that I haven’t exploded and killed myself yet! Don’t worry I’m not going to kill myself. There’s way to much for me to live for also my family needs me. My family is so messed up. You saw the complaints about my dad and there are a hell of a lot more. My little sister’s a crazy, stupid, and a never quiet *****. Not even in her sleep! She snores so much! I’ve had to share a room with her for fourteen years! My older sister is a controlling ***** who never does anything and is soooooooo lazy! She always pushes her work off on me when she can. My brother is a bad tempered asshole who never stops annoying me! He wakes me up at five in the morning, jumps on my bed when I’m trying to watch tv, walks in on me in the bathroom/shower on purpose, hugs me when I don’t want a hug, shoves our cat at me every five minutes telling me to hold him, and when I refuse to hug him he shouts why don’t you love me!, when I do hug him he says I love you then I say I love you too and he screams no you don’t and storms away, he’s the biggest hypocrite in the world!, and when me or my sister accidentally hurt him he hurts us back 10 times worse!, I swear me and my mom are the only normal ones in my family. The worst thing is that no one pays attention to me. I’m the lowly middle child. My older sister is the oldest so she gets more attention, angeleque is the youngest so she gets more attention, my brother is the only boy and he’s brain damaged because of a train accident (don’t ask) so he gets more attention, and then there’s me the good one and the smart one, but no one cares.
For the cherry on top I’m fat but I shouldn’t be, I get plenty of exercise and I don’t have an eating problem, I’m not very popular, and I haven’t had a boyfriend girlfriend relationship since I moved to this tiny town I live in. I need some advice. Please help me! I’m on the brink of insanity! You have no IDEA how much I just want to burst out crying right now! My dad makes me so mad so do my siblings and my mom makes me mad too sometimes but not as much as everyone else in my family. And at least she cares about how I feel sometimes. Nobody else does at any time! I’m so mad and sad, and I wish I could move out but I can’t because I’m only 15 and I do have a job but it’s working for my dad at the family business. I’m actually working as I’m writing this. I just need some friendly advice, although I probably sound crazy and messed up right now but I just have a lot to deal with. Way too much to deal with. So please help me, I’m desperate.
@traildaw… thanks, but trust me I can’t let it go. I’ve tried before and they just keep giving me reasons not to let go.

You are a very gifted poet, so please focus on writing!
Let all of this go! You have been betrayed and use that pain to write an amazing set of poems.
You’re 15… in no time you’ll be a graduate of HS and on your way to college.
Don’t worry so much about your weight, just eat healthy (nutrient rich foods) and the weight will fall off if you add a two mile walk to your daily routine! And, that time spent walking… can be used to think creatively for more poems.
Believe in yourself, let the rest go!

About 3 weeks ago, my mother starting acting completely different than she ever has. Before all of this, she acted like she hated to be alone, now she acts like she never wants to spend time with anyone in my family. Instead, whenever she has free time, she spends it, supposedly, with either my cousin, or her best friend. One thing I find particularly alarming about these trips is that she almost always seems to buy something from Victoria’s Secret whenever she goes out. She has terrible mood swings all the time, and snaps at me, my brother and father all the time. She’s started acting overly concerned about her figure, and has since gone on a diet, and begun exercising. Every night, when my father goes to bed, she stays up for another 3-4 hours talking on the phone with her best friend, she claims, and in the past few days, has completely stopped sleeping in the same room with my dad, blaming it on his snoring. To top all of this off, she told me today that she just doesn’t love my dad anymore, and that they just can’t seem to work it out. That she would feel this way angers me more than I can put into words. Last year, my dad lost his job, and worked out of state, away from all of us, for almost the entire year, just to support us. I’ve confronted her about her unusual behavior many times, and she always blames it on something else (Menopause, reaction to medicine, lack of sleep, etc.). I believed her at first, but now that her story keeps changing, I’m having serious doubts that she’s telling me the truth. I don’t know if I’m just being paranoid, or if these truly are signs of infidelity. Please, if anyone else has ever had to go through this, let me know if it sounds like she’s cheating, and if so, what I should do to deal with it. I don’t want my family to fall apart, but it feels like it’s getting closer to that point everyday…

i know u would like 2 solve this prob. but its not ur prob. it between ur parents. u need 2 get a grip on ur own life’ and let ur parents work out their probs. no matter what happens between them . ur still gonna have ur own life, that excludes them.

I’ve always heard that sleep apnea was related to weight. My mom is slightly overweight, but more of what I would consider ‘average-sized’. She is not approaching even ‘chubby’, but carries her weight in her stomach.

She always sleeps on the couch, watching television, so I am able to bear witness to her sleeping habits.

She constantly wakes up throughout the night. Usually indulging in a late snack – bad, I know. She always snores. I just witnessed her snoring, then stopping, and then easing back into it.

If her snoring would be related to eating habits at all, I’ll list her way of eating. Her ‘breakfast’ is coffee, usually 2-3 cups. Her lunch is a sandwich, yogurt, and fruit. Her dinner is either what she makes (always something healthy, because I’m diabetic. I need to learn how to cook), OR something completely in the opposite direction that she buys like Chinese food! Lately, she’s been exercising, and she hasn’t been cooking, so it’s just been a large salad. Yesterday, it was Chinese food though.

I’m worried about my mom. She’s very stubborn and independent, so if I just go up to her and say ‘I’m worried that you may have sleep apnea’ she’ll just roll her eyes. I need something more concrete.

What do you guys think about all of this? Is it possible?

Oh yes, and she is approaching 60. She is quite healthy though. Rarely drinks, and doesn’t smoke. Vivacious.

You can be skinny as a rail and have sleep apnea, but yes the more overweight a person is, the greater the odds. As a person ages tissues sag, and when they sag enough in the throat they can interfere with your breathing when you lie down. A person has sleep apnea when they just don’t snore, but they actually stop breathing for seconds, then they usually wake up gasping for air even they might not be awake enough to know it. So that’s your clue, if her chest stops moving or she wakes up gasping, she has sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is usually very treatable. Her regular physician will schedule a sleep test in an overnight sleep clinic. Most insurance companies require pre-approval.

What do you guys think about all of this? Is it possible?

Oh yes, and she is approaching 60. She is quite healthy though. Rarely drinks, and doesn’t smoke. Vivacious.

One of the most common symptoms of sleep apnea is when a person has one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while sleeping.

These breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They often occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound. Do confuse the loud snorts with simple snoring. Snoring can start up and stop when a person changes their body position while lying down. When she stops snoring it doesn’t mean she has stopped breathing.

A person who is obese and lies on her back while sleeping can stop breathing while sleeping because of the weight of the neck area pressing down on the breathing passage. Your mother does not sound obese from what you’ve said so I don’t think there is an issue there.

Sleep apnea usually is a chronic (ongoing) condition that disrupts the sleep. You often move out of deep sleep and into light sleep when your breathing pauses or becomes shallow.

While I do not think your mom has sleep apnea, I am not a doctor. There are places she can go where they can do an overnight study of her to see if she suffers from sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can affect anyone so if you are very concerned then I would encourage her to see her doctor for proper medical advice.
