Snoring remains a common joke and fodder in pop culture. Surely you have seen the classic comedy sketch in which someone cannot sleep because someone else is snoring too loudly. Well, it may be funny in the context of a comedy sketch but it is most definitely not funny in real life. If you are someone that is constantly snoring and hearing a lot of static about it from others, you will need to get a handle on the problem. You may also have concerns regarding what causes snoring. Understanding the cause can often provide an insight into why the problem occurs and what can be done to reduce its prevalence. And yes, it is possible to reduce the problem of snoring when you have an insight into the root causes of it.

At the most basic of definitions, you could say that snoring is the process of sending vibrations through the respiratory system that causes the sounds associated with snoring. This is the result of obstructions in the air passageways. So, you could say snoring is similar to air forcing its air out of the body. That is why snoring can sometimes have an incredibly negative impact that snoring can cause under certain circumstances.

Some of the causes of snoring can be – for lack of a better word – incidental. That is, the cause results from an external factor yields the problem of snoring. Basically, a cold or, possibly, an allergy can lead to the breathing and respiratory problems that lead to snoring. Sometimes, a simple cold can lead to major congestion in the nose which forces the person to breathe through the mouth when sleeping. This can lead to a chopping breathing process that yields the gasping snoring sounds we are most familiar with.

Then, there are causes that are based on lifestyle choices and can have extremely negative consequences as a result. For example, air can have a difficult time getting out of the passageway due to fat in the throat region. This can be a very negative situation because it can set the stage for potential sleep apnea at some point which can be life threatening under certain circumstances.

Alcohol and drugs that can relax the muscles in the throat to an extreme degree may be another behavioral choice that leads to the development of severe snoring. And this can also present various dangers as well. If you snoring is based on obesity or substance abuse, it may be time to serious rethink your lifestyle choices as they are certainly not proving helpful.

Injuries to the jaw can lead to specific problems as well as they can cause a misalignment. Such misaligns are common causes for the onset of snoring. When the problems in the jaw heal, snoring may disappear. However, if the problem proves persistent, then it may be best to see a physician to deal with the issue of misalignment.

And probably the easiest cause of snoring to reverse is sleeping on your back. When you do this, the tongue may role back slightly and this will lead to blockages of the airway. Switching to sleeping on your stomach or your side can deliver the proper result.

Yes, the causes of snoring can be varied. Thankfully, the treatments for such problems are relatively simple.
