My partner snores, but more worrying is the fact that he frequently stops breathing….sometimes for up to a minute before taking a gasp. I have managed to get used to the snoring but I often don’t sleep properly because I am listening out in case he doesn’t breath. Then I nudge him to try and get him to take a breath.
We are in Switzerland where he is a contractor. He is reluctant to take any time off work because he doesn’t get paid for it, does anybody know of a cure which does not involve surgery (he will not consider an operation).
I have heard that there are sleep clinics which can monitor your sleep and then fit you with a device which keeps your airways open?
I am terrified that he will either stop breathing alltogether, or suffer brain damage through lack of oxygen.
This is a serious question. Serious answers only please!
Everyone in my family is the same way it is really bad!! One of my brothers had to use a CPAP machine for a while because of his sleep apnea, but we finally found the answer to stop snoring and it is awesome!! It is a custom fitted mouthpiece that we purchased on http://www.prosnore.com it really works good and my brother doesn’t even have to use his CPAP anymore!! IT IS AWESOME! GIVE IT A TRY!! He probably has Sleep apnea. He could look into getting a CPAP machine.

Im a respiratory therapist… sounds as if he has sleep apnea… I suggest making an appointment with a pulmonologist, who will have him undergo a sleep study to determine this… if he does, the treatment is simple .. a machine called c pap….

He won’t stop breathing altogether. The body has a mechanism that stops this. However, the lack of oxygen and lack of sleep can cause long term problems and he needs to get this treated.
As a short term solution, sew a tennis ball into the back of his pyjamas so he sleeps on his side and can’t roll over onto his back. This will help you get some sleep as well!

This can be serious. It most likely is a condition called sleep apnea. Periods of not breathing during sleep. The only thing I can suggest besides a Dr. advice (recommended) is a product called Breathe-Right nasal strips. In theory, a metal strip in a Band aid which is placed across the bridge of the nose, opening the nostrils.

My father has this… he did go for an operation but it didn’t work. It may be caused by being overweight, so maybe if your partner needed to lose a few pounds, that would help? If not, maybe a clinic would be a good idea. I think it is very rare for someone to stop breathing altogether in their sleep, but a minute seems a bit extreme; for my dad he only stops for about 20 seconds before he gasps.
I’m sorry you’re not sleeping well, it can take it’s toll. Maybe you could use this as a bit of leverage to persuade your partner to see a doctor.
I wish you the best of luck!

Well your partner has something called Sleep apnea. which basically means that he has an obstruction in his respiratory tract that causes him to stop breathing at some point during his sleep so he has to take a gasp to catch his breath. this is a serious issue that should not be neglected because his sleep becomes disturbed and he will be very tired during the day and sometimes fall asleep while driving or something. there is a device called a CPAP which is like a face mask to keep the airway open during sleep, some people just love it and are happy to discover it and some find it bothersome during sleep but it does improve sleep and thus quality of life. and it is non surgical so why not give it a shot?

Your partner has sleep apnea–I had the same symptoms myself-I was to the point of falling asleep standing up & was in denial when others told me i was doing it .–He will have to spend a night in a sleep apnea clinic with dozens of monitors gluded to his skin so the doctors can deturmon how bad his situation is.–The end result will be a CPAP machine (A 12"x12"x3"machine that sits by the bed with a 6 foot long hose connected to a face mask that covers only his noise.)—It basicly forces him to breath through his noise .–The snoring will stop –he will not stop breathing in his sleep anymore–He’ll sleep a lot better.

Been there –Done it —Been useing it every night for the past 6 yrs.(You both will get used to it )

It’s a condition known as sleep apnoea, a serious respiratory system, he should see a Dr. there is a machine he may be given to make sure he is oxygenated through the night.
Also he will be checked to find the cause.
if he doesn’t take the time to see a Dr. he may have serious complications such as stroke and mortality!
Sorry to be blunt, depending on the cause, that will determine the succesful treatment
